چکیده

The errors in determining the biologically effective and broadband UV irradiances from spectroradiometer measurements depend critically on procedures employed in the calibration process. A series of intercomparisons of two calibration standards and a spectroradiometer were undertaken in two laboratories. The near UV (320-400 nm) and shorter wavelength (280-320 nm) waveband irradiances of one standard obtained employing the other lamp for calibration agreed to within 3% and the erythemal irradiances agreed to within 5 to 6%. This was also the case if the lamps were swapped. There was no significant drift with time over five weeks in the measured standard lamp output. The variation of the spectroradiometer calibration during this period was less than 6%. It was observed that the calibration of the spectroradiometer varied by about 10% per degree of the temperature change in the temperature range between 22 and 25C.

Spectral distribution of UV-B irradiance derived by synthetic model compared with simulation results of TUV and ground measurements

Multifilter rotating shadowband radiometers are deployed in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) UV-B (ultraviolet-B) Monitoring and Research Program to measure UV-B irradiances at seven discrete wavelengths. A synthetic model is used to construct the continuous spectral distribution, from which irradiance integrals can be performed fo...

Physical, chemical, and ultraviolet radiative characteristics of aerosol in central Alaska

[1] A new long-term monitoring site for providing multiwavelength (ultraviolet through near-infrared) and broadband irradiances has been established at the Poker Flat Research Range, Alaska, in order to assess the impacts of ozone, cloud cover, surface albedo, and aerosol conditions on trends in ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the surface. Targeted field measurements were conducted in the f...

A Simple Empirical Equation to Calculate Cloud Optical Thickness from Shortwave Broadband Measurements

Observational studies of shortwave cloud optical thickness, τc, play an important role in determining how clouds affect climate. Accordingly, considerable effort has been, and continues to be expended to characterize the spatial and temporal distribution of τc over the globe. This effort involves satellite and ground-based measurements that infer τc from measurements of the reflection or transm...

New procedure for interpolating NIST FEL lamp irradiances

The Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SSBUV) programme uses 1000 W, quartz-halogen, tungsten coiled ® lament (FEL) lamps as the primary radiometric calibration source in the 250 nm to 405 nm wavelength region. The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends using the product of a ® fth-order polynomial and a Planck function as a ® tting function for interpolating the ...

The Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Monitor for MAVEN

The Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) monitor is an instrument on the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, designed to measure the variability of the solar soft x-rays and EUV irradiance at Mars. The solar output in this wavelength range is a primary energy input to the Mars atmosphere and a driver for the processes leading to atmospheric escape. The MAVEN EUV monitor consists o...
